API (the American Petroleum Institute) created API 682, the standard for mechanical seals and sealing systems, in order to set a very high standard for seals in the petrochemical industries.  Seals that meet this standard must withstand extensive and rigorous testing, and prove to be reliable in the demanding API environment.  API 682 seals are called upon to seal light hydrocarbons, hot coking products, abrasive crude oils, catalyst slurries, amines, caustics, sour waters, acids, and other severe duty applications.  Leakage must be minimized to meet tough emissions and safety standards.
